Emergency Plumbing Problems

Emergency Plumbing Problems

Burst pipeAs any homeowner can tell you, there are some days when you just don’t have time to call a plumber. You need a solution now. Thankfully, some of the bigger plumbing emergencies most homeowners face can be alleviated or stopped until you can get a professional in to fix it. Here are three of the most common plumbing emergencies, and how to deal with them.

Burst Pipe

It’s no secret that a burst pipe is a serious problem. If left unchecked, it can destroy walls, flooring, or electrical wiring. Best case scenario is replacing a small section of wall, so it’s best to not let this one get out of control. If you notice that a pipe has burst, whether from cold weather or age, immediately shut off all water to the area. If you live in an apartment complex, contact your landlord.

As soon as the water flow has slowed, call a plumber. They’ll arrive as soon as possible to fix the issue and assess the damage. In the meantime, it’s best to start removing water and valuables from the area. Mops, towels, buckets, and a wet/dry vacuum all work for water removal. The goal is to prevent mold and mildew buildup as much as possible.

Backed Up Toilet

Not properly taking care of your toilet can quickly result in a nasty overflow. Not only do you have to deal with sewage flooding your bathroom, but the water could do serious damage to the rest of your home.

The first step is to remove the top of the toilet and make sure the rubber stopper is sealing the drain hole to prevent more water flowing into the bowl. Next, grab a plunger and try to work the blockage deeper into the drainpipe. If this isn’t successful, apply a small ring of petroleum jelly around the rim of the rubber cup of the plunger, and try again. If this doesn’t remove the blockage, it’s time to call a plumber.

Rusted Water Heater

Over time, water heaters can corrode and rust sets in. If possible, try to have this taken care of before it grows into a larger problem. However, if you’ve woken up to a leaking water heater, make sure to shut off the valves immediately. If the valve is broken, shut off the water to your home.

Next, turn off the power supply. If you have an electric water heater, shut if off at the breaker. If it is a gas water heater, shut it off as the dedicated gas line to the heater. If your tank is leaking and you can’t stop the flow of water, consider draining the tank immediately by screwing a garden hose to the valve on the bottom of the tank and leading it to a drain location. Once you’ve cleared the area of any standing water, call a professional.

If you or anyone you know is currently dealing with these issues, have them give us a call.
